As someone who travelled for business for many years, I understand only too well how this can have an effect on so many areas of your life – on the social life, your home life and above all your health. Although I was fully covered by business health insurance and thankfully never got really sick during my travels, apart from a nasty tummy bug in Kazakhstan, my health was affected in many other ways.
Firstly, the travelling life is often sedentary. You have long waits at airports and spend long times cramped in planes or being driven between meetings. On many trips you only see the inside of the hotel and the insides of the client offices, apart from a few restaurants in between.
This means that your exercise schedule often goes completely to pot unless you are very motivated and can keep going in even the most basic of hotel gyms.
And the eating patterns are also usually not great for your health. Eating three course meals with alcohol every night as you entertain clients, grabbing a quick snack before a meeting or eating room service on your lap – not conducive to a healthy diet.
The stress levels too are very high and you tend to work longer hours as you are always either working or entertaining, so you hardly ever get a break.
